I’m going to be moving soon. This is going to be the first time I have ever moved on my own. I would appreciate any tips or advice. Also, if anyone can recommend a service I could use, I would appreciate that. I don’t want to be scammed on my first move!

Whoever you choose to go with, make sure you find out more about them. They can put on hidden fees and things like that. There are many people who would like to scam you and sometimes, you may not even know it. These are the people with no physical address. They use a P.O. box for their address. Beware of these ones. When they call, if no business name appears, be careful.

Even though this should be a no brainer, I suggest that you start preparing sooner rather than later. Moving is hectic and stressful. Don’t put things off or you will be up against it later on. I only say this because you mentioned that this is your first move. You will be surprised how many things can keep cropping up and causing little problems.
You should also contact the movers about 6 or 7 weeks before your move. Give yourself enough time to arrange things with them. Whoever you choose, you should be able to get an estimate. Get an estimate in person; how can anyone estimate over the phone? Keep that in mind.

Time is always a big issue. Give yourself loads of time. This way, you can do things in a more relaxed manner. Think of it like an exam; you should be studying every day for your exams, not cramming everything in a week.

If you have help, that would be nice. If not, start collecting boxes and get other supplies. Make sure that you label everything. Keep a list with you as well. This way, you know what’s in the boxes. Make sure to label the appropriate boxes with a “fragile” sticker so that movers will know.
Have a few daily essentials you need handy. If you pack everything away, you won’t have anything to use! You may need a paper towel, toilet paper, soap, some utensils; basically anything you think you may need till the last day. These can be easily packed at the last minute. Take care of all other details and arrangements so that everyone is taken care of.
This is great advice. Thank you all so much. I think I would have waited a while longer before starting, so I’m glad you warned me. Now I know I better get cracking!
