Does anybody have any experience getting a work permit in Canada? I am living in Canada (Montreal to be more precise) and I am a Canadian citizen. I also have my own business. What I would like to do is help a relative to come here and work for me. What should I do and what should my relative do? Do both of us have to put in an application or does only one person have to do this?

Also, is it easy and straightforward? In other words, would it be successful? Should I get help or can this be done by ourselves?

Sorry, but this is way out of my depth. Personally, I would never attempt something like this on my own. Best to get help from a lawyer or legal representative.

I agree with Oliver. This isn’t a simple or straightforward process. You shouldn’t try applying it by yourself unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

As the employer, you will have to apply for something called an LMIA or Labour Market Impact Assessment. This will be granted if it is deemed that there is no Canadian or permanent resident who can do the job. This is quite tricky.

There are instances where this step may not be necessary. There are several conditions or examples where, if you are lucky, you may not be required to apply for this. You and I won’t really know the details, but an immigration lawyer will.

You’re right, I had no idea about the LMIA. 😞 This whole process is honestly so foreign to me. Worst part is I’m already busy enough with running the business and helping my relative find a place to live before he moves.

I guess I’ll do some research and read up on a few links to get started…

Don’t feel bad. I agree it’s a tough process, but an immigration lawyer will know how to advise you and work with these things. They know stuff inside out, right? Before you start to panic, talk to someone about your situation first.

    Any recommendations for immigration lawyers?

Since you’re also from Montreal, I did get immigration help from Tiziana Aiello a while back. Had a very pleasant experience. The whole process was swift, efficient, and clear. My case wasn’t related to a work permit, but I’m pretty sure her team will know what to do.
