We just got a new puppy. He’s about 4 months old now, but we have noticed that he is really afraid to go down the stairs. He is not so bad when it comes to going up. When we go down, he suddenly stops and looks at us helplessly.

It is the cutest thing to see but at the same time, we are a little concerned. We are not sure why he is doing this. We can only guess that he has some kind of fear. Has anyone heard of something like this before? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

What are your steps made of? Are they slippery? This could be part of the problem.

It is wood and it is rather slippery for him.

Well, you have to start somewhere. Try to do something about it. If it works, then great. Case closed. However, if he is still hesitant, then you have to keep looking for an answer. If he gets too big, you may not be able to carry him down.

Perhaps you can try placing non-slip rugs. There are also socks that are non-slip, but I suggest trying the rugs first. Perhaps you can use something else that gives his feet a good grip and prevents slipping.

You could also train him to descend slowly, one step at a time. You need to be patient and offer lots of praise. You could have him go up a couple of steps, then place a treat on the first step and one at the bottom of the stairs. Your puppy will be compelled to go down slowly to eat the treat. Going down the stairs now has a reward. You can also add another step on a daily basis.

I love both your suggestions. They sound like they could work.

When you’re training your puppy, remember to be patient. Learning won’t happen overnight.

Where did you get your puppy? What breed is he?

  • at August 17, 2018

I got my puppy from Kybra Kennels. He’s a Portuguese Water Dog.

You could also try non-slip tread strips. Wood floors and steps can be slippery for dogs. They aren’t dumb. They know going up, they will be OK. They also know that coming down, they could take a tumble, so maybe that explains why your puppy is hesitant?

I have seen those strips. They feel like sandpaper, right?

Yes, those are the ones I had in mind. They do feel a lot like sandpaper but it will give him good traction. Why don’t you contact the place you got him from and also ask their advice? I checked out their site. I would think they would have a lot of experience and can offer you some golden nuggets.
