Hi people, I need help with something. I am going through a difficult time with the water in my kitchen. I live in an apartment building. The temperature of the water has never been that great, but it is OK. However, that is not the problem. In the last month, I have noticed that the water in the kitchen is very moody.

The hot water comes out freezing cold for a couple of hours. Then it will come out like room temperature or lukewarm. Then, at night, for another couple of hours, it goes back to freezing again. It is hard to do my dishes, but it is even harder to wash my hands. I have a problem with my hands (something happened years ago). If I wash my hands in freezing water, afterwards, my hands feel like it is burning for about half an hour.

The thing is, the next day it is all normal again. Then, after about 3 or 4 days, it starts acting up again. It is always only in the kitchen. The water in my bathroom is unaffected. I just don’t get that.

I have complained to the management and they keep saying that they are on it. I also found out that there are other tenants in the building going through the same thing. Does anyone here have any advice or suggestions as to why this is happening and why it has been going on for weeks?

Wow, I’m glad it’s you and not me! Sorry about that. That is frustrating. Well, what has the management said? Have they told you why this is happening?

I don’t understand all their technical jargon, but the maintenance guy said he found that some lever or something was turned off and he said he turned it back on. But then, a few days later, it started again, so I mentioned it to them.

The maintenance guy came and said it could be my cartridge? He came and changed my whole faucet and gave me one that has separate taps. He said that would take care of the problem. My previous faucet was a single. I had to adjust the lever (which I actually prefer). Now I have 2 things to turn on and adjust.

However, the day he changed my faucet, the hot water started coming out freezing cold again for a while. So I went and complained again.

There is obviously a problem with the plumbing and not just your apartment or faucet. You said others had similar issues? Do you know if anyone has a dishwasher? Perhaps they have a washing machine? It is quite possible this could cause issues. Next time, ask them about this.

Oh my god! You may have something! I mentioned this to the maintenance guy, regarding the dishwasher and washing machine. He actually told me that there is a tenant who does have a washing machine! Nobody is supposed to have that in their apartment.

Apparently, the landlord had spoken to him about it and he got upset and started swearing! He refused to get rid of it, so the landlord increased his rent as a result.

Well, that doesn’t help my situation. The maintenance guy told me to give him a few days and he would get back to me. If he does not, I am going to keep on chasing them until this problem is resolved.

I mean, I am paying rent and not getting my money’s worth, right? Something has to be done.

I suggest you keep a journal and note down the days that this happens. Keep a record. You never know. It could come in really handy.

Also, talk to a plumber (i.e. ExpressRooter or any in you rarea) and get some expert advice. Never hurts to have a second opinion.

That’s a great suggestion. I never thought about it. I will do that. You’re right. If there was any legal action, this will come in handy.
