I was wondering if any of you have any motion sensors installed in your home? I am thinking of getting this, but I am not too sure on what things to consider.
I’d like to get some feedback and advice from you guys before I do anything. I don’t want to be taken for a ride by some salesperson. If they see me looking all dumb and innocent, they’ll probably try to sell me stuff that may be too sophisticated for my needs!

For starters, there are different kinds of motion sensors. Some can detect heat level changes. This type of sensor is normally used for a larger area. If you just need something for a front entrance only, then a laser sensor is good enough.
I got mine from Absolute Automation. They know their stuff and they were really very helpful as well. If you make a decision to go forward with it, you can contact them.

I’m not sure whether the price of a motion sensor has any bearing on what you may choose. For some people, price is a factor. Look at the price and the area you wish to cover before making a decision.
Sometimes, you may be lucky to get a good used motion sensor. This is a way to save some money if you are on a tight budget. However, if you do get a used one, make sure that you check it thoroughly before you buy it.
I had no idea you could get a used one. However, I won’t go down that route. I appreciate the tip, but I would rather get a brand new one. Firstly, I wouldn’t even how to check for any faults. And the other thing is, I wouldn’t want to take a risk of a used one not working properly. Yikes!

Depending on your home, you may need to consider the detection zone. What’s the zone you wish to cover? Here is where you could make a mistake, so be careful.
Somebody mentioned a company you could approach. You may want to ask them about this. Also ask them about the range. This is the longest distance it can detect reliably. All this depends on your settings. Explain this to the company, so take some measurements.

Don’t forget about sensitivity. These things can pick up the slightest disturbance. There are many features, some of which may be more important to you. You can be alerted by a light or an alarm. Some even have videos! You could have a silent alarm where only you and law enforcement will be alerted.
